Printing

Department-supplied printers are available at no cost in the Coastal Science Center. Please observe the following guidelines.

Printing Guidelines

  1. All printing-enabled computers provided by the department run Linux. Although we have Microsoft Windows virtual machines, we do NOT license Microsoft Office. If you need to print a Word or Excel file, do one of the following:
    1. From your Windows laptop, print or save the document in PDF format, then use a Linux workstation to print the file.
    2. Use OpenOffice on a Linux workstation to open and print the file. You are likely to have better luck with .doc and .xls files as opposed to .docx or .xlsx.
    3. Connect your laptop to a wired connection available in the Nerd Lounge or Tutoring Lab, and configure a connection to the appropriate print host from your laptop.

  2. Avoid printing lengthy documents. Paper and toner both cost money, and excessive printing is not an environmentally sensitive practice.

  3. If you must print a lengthy document, print using the HP LaserJet 2200DT (attached to dinosaur01 in the Nerd Lounge). Enable duplex printing mode (long-edge binding) to save paper.

  4. When a printer runs out of paper, please notify Mr. Whalley in room 112A.
