Dr. Sebastien Goasguen presented our second colloquium on Friday, February 18th. Colloquium slides are attached below in PDF format.

Cloud Computing Research and Education

Abstract

In this talk, I will give an introduction to Cloud computing and put it in perspective with the natural evolution of technology. I will show how grid computing ties to cloud systems and how virtualization is a key enabler of this new computing paradigm. In addition, I will present the curriculum of a course that heavily uses the high-level scripting language Python to design and build distributed systems, giving the students a hands-on approach to clouds and the numerous APIs available to build novel infrastructures and applications.

Biography

Dr. Goasguen is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Clemson University, which he joined in 2006. Previously, he was at Purdue University as a senior research scientist leading the TeraGrid and Open Science Grid projects. Since 2009, he is also a scientific associate at CERN, where he works on the first cloud computing system for use with Large Hadron Collider experiments. Dr. Goasguen has published over 60 international publications in grid computing, virtualization, nanoelectronics, and electromagnetics.

The first speaker for our spring 2011 colloquium series will be Dr. Will Jones, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems at Coastal Carolina University. Dr. Jones will be presenting a short introduction to analog to digital conversion.  In particular, he will cover the issues involved with sampling, as well as the design and implementation of an extremely fast, but expensive A to D converter known as a FLASH A/D. Numbers and Bytes members are encouraged to attend as this presentation represents your second club meeting this semester.

A copy of this presentation is available for members of the CCU community [on campus only].
